Louise, 57, dying of cancer
3/Louise
Louiseâs life started inconspicuously. She spent most of her middle years raising her children and living in a small town on the outskirts of Cleveland. The house in which she lived for the past two decades is located in one of those quiet streets lined with trees and with small trimmed lawns, minutes away from a noisy airport and a metropolitan area.
Yet upon entering Louiseâs house, one was immediately struck by a sense of strong individuality. Her home reflected the special gifts and talents that were the evidence of the inner beauty she had earned through years of struggle. She had raised her three children, divorced her husband, and in her mid-50âs made the transition from volunteer church worker to professional social worker in a local hospital. She developed and became Director of the first Social Service Department the hospital ever had.
As her children grew up and moved away, she became the lone occupant of the house in which she had lived for half of her life. This house became her refuge and place for introspection. It was the place where her two faithful Labrador retrievers were with her. Her home and her two dogs were her last remaining attachments and her great concern when she had to face the ultimate reality of her death.
When her cancer was diagnosed in 1976, she kept it to herself for a while, reflecting on the options she had, fully aware of the advantages and disadvantages of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. In her work at the hospital she had helped many patients to face this same dilemma, and she was well aware of the general reluctance to deal with these issues.
